Dubrovnik sunset cruise

Most magical sunset at sea

There are some Dubrovnik experiences that are beautiful simply because of the views, and then there are those that turn into memories you keep talking about long after the trip is over. This sunset cruise was definitely one of the latter.

From the moment we stepped aboard the beautiful traditional wooden ship, the evening already felt a little different. Before setting sail, the owner warmly welcomed everyone on board and gave a short introduction to the boat and the experience ahead. It was a simple but thoughtful touch that immediately created a relaxed, personal atmosphere, rather than making the cruise feel like just another organised tour.

The sea was a little rough during our cruise, but somehow that only made the adventure feel more authentic. As the boat slowly followed Dubrovnik’s coastline and approached the island of Lokrum, we were treated to something we certainly hadn’t expected, a dolphin appeared beside the boat and began swimming alongside us.

Seeing a dolphin in its natural habitat is special enough, but watching it glide through the Adriatic with the Dubrovnik sunset unfolding around us made the moment feel almost surreal. It was one of those completely unplanned travel experiences that no itinerary could ever promise, and perhaps that is exactly what made it so memorable.

With a handcrafted cocktail in hand, the warm sea breeze around us, the changing colours of the sky and Dubrovnik’s famous Old Town walls glowing in the distance, the atmosphere was hard to beat. Every now and then, another glimpse of the dolphin reminded us just how extraordinary the evening had become.

The cocktails were prepared by a professional cocktail master, adding another lovely touch to the experience, while a selection of savoury snacks and sweet bites was served throughout the cruise. It is also worth knowing that there are two different experiences to choose from. Alongside this sunset cocktail cruise, guests can opt for a culinary version, the Dubrovnik & Lokrum Sunset Dinner Cruise, which includes Popara, a traditional local fish dish, paired with Croatian wines.

For us, however, it was the combination of everything that made this particular evening so special. The sunset over the Adriatic, Dubrovnik’s Old Town seen from an entirely different perspective, the gentle movement of the traditional wooden boat, a beautifully prepared cocktail, and a boat full of people from different corners of the world simply enjoying the moment together.

And then, of course, there was the dolphin.

It is easy to see why a sunset cruise like this can become one of the highlights of one’s stay in Dubrovnik. Some experiences are carefully planned, while others happen completely by chance. This one gave us a little bit of both and it is certainly an evening we will remember for a long time.
