Mara Bratoš’ Lopud portraits were created over a span of 25 years, documenting the coming-of-age journey of a young girl from the island of Lopud and Dubrovnik, the actress Jelena Perčin. The project delves into the strength of women and the authentic experience of growing up on the island of Lopud in Dubrovnik. Mara Bratoš produced three series of artworks – in 1998, 2003, and 2023 – that illustrate the evolution of society and the region itself, through the personal narrative of a girl and her own transformation within that society. This narrative holds significant meaning in the Mediterranean region, where leaving home in search of a better life has resulted in numerous abandoned villages and islands along the coast.
