Leb i sol enjoyed immense popularity during the 1970s and 1980s. Though their record sales didn’t match some pop and folk artists, they were highly esteemed and frequently packed venues in Yugoslavia’s major cities. Their first two albums are often deemed seminal, while most of their work is varied enough to appeal, at least partially, to a broad audience. The influence of Macedonian ethnic and folk music is evident in their use of unusual time signatures (5/4, 7/8) and non-standard scales (like the Phrygian dominant). While all band members were skilled musicians, Vlatko Stefanovski is often hailed as an exceptional guitar virtuoso.
