Margerita Rakić – Emerging From Darkness
May 1 2026 - May 15 2026

In her exhibition Emerging From Darkness, Margerita Rakić explores the tension between chaos and creation. Building on her 2022 research into cosmogonic myths, Rakić treats “chaos”—the darkness and formless abyss—not as a void, but as a space of infinite potential.
Key Themes:
The Medium as Message: Using charcoal, a material born from the transformation of organic matter, Rakić creates deep black surfaces that act as active carriers of form rather than passive backgrounds.
Symbolic Blackness: The black tones evoke a dual meaning: the depth of soil and decomposition, but also fertility and the birth of new ideas.
Horror Vacui: Her large-format drawings are dense and saturated, mirroring the “overcrowded” nature of mythological chaos where something is always on the verge of forming.
Vegetation & Vitality: Intuitive motifs of ivy, shrubs, and dry leaves protrude from the dark, representing the cycle of growth and transience.
Evolution of the Cycle: Her recent work reveals a stylistic shift: while earlier pieces featured plants emerging from darkness, her latest works reverse this, placing dark stems in the foreground against a lightening background. This transition explores a new relationship between the point of origin and the resulting creation.
Ultimately, Rakić’s work invites the viewer to use their own imagination to complete the narrative, viewing each painting as an unfolding process rather than a static image.
About the Artist: Margerita Rakić (b. 1991, Pula) is a Master of Art Education and Applied Arts from the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka. She lives and works in Pula, balancing her studio practice with pedagogical work.
