Photography Exhibition: I Swallowed My Dream

In I Swallowed My Dream, Glorija Lizde explores the historical representation of women in psychiatric institutions through photography and collage, focusing on 19th-century medical archives, particularly from Paris’s Salpêtrière Hospital. By restaging archival images and inserting herself as both subject and photographer, she questions the power dynamics embedded in these visual records. Drawing on texts by French and Croatian doctors, Lizde constructs a personal “archive of hysteria,” blending documentation and fiction to reflect on how institutional practices shaped perceptions of women’s bodies and mental health—then and now.
