The Melancholy Women of Ragusa

From Dubrovnik’s rich history, we spotlight nine women and one man. They remind us how tied we are to our roots, and how some things about women’s lives haven’t changed. Each person made a small dent in a male-dominated world. Dubrovnik’s past, while trying to protect women, often worked against them. Some of our heroines knew this, some didn’t. Some fought back, others suffered quietly. Some challenged their roles, others accepted them. But each did something noteworthy. Their stories make us ask: Has our civilization really moved forward since the biblical creation of mankind? Has it progressed even a little bit, by Dubrovnik’s measure?
