There are places in Dubrovnik that people visit just for the food, and then there are places where the atmosphere and setting are so beautiful that they become the most important part of the experience. Poklisar is very much such a place.
Sitting in the Old Port, in one of the most atmospheric corners of the Old City, its terrace opens onto a view that is difficult to improve upon, the majestic St. John’s Fortress, boats gently moving across the harbour, ancient stone walls rising all around, and the Adriatic stretching out beyond. There is something wonderfully cinematic about sitting here as the day fades into night, when the city lanterns begin to glow and Dubrovnik takes on that particular magic it has after sunset.

At its heart, Poklisar is a family-run restaurant built around a team that has dedicated many years of their lives to making the place what it is today. The same staff has been working together for more than a decade, and that kind of continuity is something that can be felt. There is an ease to the service, a familiarity and warmth that is difficult to manufacture. Poklisar feels like a place with its own rhythm and personality, shaped by people who genuinely care about it and take pride in being part of its story.
Two men are inseparable from that story, chef Željko Trtoman and manager Danijel Vulanović.
Željko spends his days in the kitchen, turning simple, local ingredients into dishes that feel both thoughtful and familiar, while Danijel has become something of a Poklisar landmark himself, known for his sense of humour, warmth and the easy way he connects with guests.
The food at Poklisar reflects that same generous and uncomplicated spirit. The menu moves comfortably between Mediterranean and international favourites, with seafood and traditional Dalmatian flavours sitting alongside meat dishes, pasta, salads and pizza. There are lighter choices for a leisurely lunch, more substantial options for dinner, and plenty of variety for families and groups with different tastes. The kitchen places an emphasis on traditionally cultivated ingredients from the Dubrovnik region, including Konavle and Primorje, keeping the food connected to the landscape that surrounds the restaurant and the Old City.
And then there is the ice cream, which deserves a little attention of its own. Homemade ice cream has been part of the Poklisar offer for years, and it fits perfectly into the relaxed rhythm of the place.
The view may be what draws people in, but it is the atmosphere, the music and, above all, the people that make Poklisar memorable. It embraces the beauty and responsibility of its setting, while remaining, at its heart, a family-run place built on genuine hospitality, where an evening in the harbour, to many, becomes one of most precious memories of Dubrovnik.
