The Orchestra was established on November 24, 1944, shortly after World War II ended and just 11 days following Skopje’s liberation. In composer Todor Skalovski’s home, a group of musicians gathered for the first time to create a symphonic orchestra. Their goal was to form the first state orchestra and lay the groundwork for a major cultural institution, unprecedented in newly freed Macedonia. The Philharmonic’s creation during this period was essentially a spiritual revolution. This revolution was led by a handful of artists who, instead of wielding guns, chose to hold musical instruments. With these, they would “fire” the beautiful sounds of music, the most exquisite art form, directly touching the hearts of future generations.
