Arrival by car
Dubrovnik can be easily reached from all sides by car. The journey can be an adventure in itself as there are several routes to choose from.
If you travel from Western Europe, you can take the highway from to Ploče, or go for the combination of the coastal road Jadranska magistrala, and highway, which is longer but also more interesting.
Jadranska magistrala offers stunning views of the seaside scenery, while the highway takes you through the more inner part of the coastal Croatia.
If you’re coming from Central Europe, you can take the highway route via Zagreb which brings you to Dubrovnik in about 7 hours. You can also take the route via Osijek across Bosnia and Herzegovina passing through Sarajevo, Mostar, and Metković. This takes a bit more time, but it has it perks since you do get to pass through some of the most attractive parts of the neighbouring country.
Petrol stations in and around Dubrovnik are open from 07:00 to 22:00, and during the summer season, the petrol stations in Kupari and Komolac operate 24/7.

And during the tourist season, a ferry route connects Dubrovnik to Bari, the beautiful Italian port city.
All boats depart and arrive at the Port of Gruž, which is located just 4 kilometers away from the Old City. The port area is offering all the necessary services and amenities for travelers, including banks, ATMs, currency exchange, parking, and supermarkets.
To purchase tickets and check timetables, tourists can visit the Jadrolinija office, which is situated close to the Gruž Port. For more information on the available routes and schedules, you can also visit Jadrolinija’s website.

General information
If you’re planning a trip to Dubrovnik, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the customs
and rules of the city. Dubrovnik citizens expect visitors to follow the same customs as the
locals. Here is a short guide to help you navigate everyday life in Dubrovnik.
Customs
There are no custom limits between EU member states or tax return. However, for other non-member states, you must follow the information provided on the www.porezna-uprava.hr website.
Visas
There are no custom limits between EU member states or tax return. However, for other non-member states, you must follow the information provided on the www.porezna-uprava.hr website.
Money
Croatia’s currency is Euro. There are plenty of exchange offices around Dubrovnik, as well as an abundance of ATMs that operate twenty-four hours a day. Most restaurants and bars accept credit cards, but not all, so be sure to have a reasonable amount of cash on you.

Roads
When behind the wheel, drivers must always have their driving license, traffic license, and visas with them. Standard laws apply, such as compulsory use of a seat belt and no mobiles except hands-free. Be aware that the speed limit in urban areas is 40 km/h unless otherwise marked, 80 km/h on open roads, and 130 km/h on highways.
Disabled travellers
Although efforts are underway to improve accessibility for disabled travellers, there’s still a long way to go. If you have specific needs, make sure to inform your hosts in advance.
Although we are far from perfect, there is still plenty of option for people with disabilities to enjoy Dubrovnik.
The Dubrovnik Cathedral, Monastery of St. Clare, Dubrovnik Cable Car, Aquarium, Dubrovnik Art Gallery, and Rector’s Palace are all fully accessible with ramps, elevators, and toilets for the disabled, however it’s advisable to contact them prior to make sure something is not being repaired etc.
Renting a wheelchair or transporter is easy through the City Society of the Red Cross or Caritas of Dubrovnik. And for those who love the sea, lifts for people with disabilities are available at the beaches Copacabana, Mandrač, Sunset Beach, Veliki Zaton, Koločep, and Šipan.

Smoking
Smoking is forbidden in all enclosed public spaces, including restaurants. However, cafes have the option to choose smoking permits which are usually outdoor terraces.
Tipping
Croatian people typically round their bill up to the nearest whole number when they want to tip but leaving 10-15% for the staff’s efforts seems like a correct thing for a visitor to do.
Public toilets
There are four public toilets in Dubrovnik Old City. Two of them are in Pile, one in Ploče, and one is at the Old Port. Working hours: 08.00 – 23.00
Water
Tap water in Dubrovnik is absolutely safe for drinking.
Parking
The multi-story car park at Ilijina Glavica is your best bet. It’s open 24/7 and has 711 parking spaces, so you won’t have to worry about finding a spot. From there, a quick walk through The Bogišić Park or along Pero Budmani Street will take you straight to the Old City in just 5 minutes.
If you prefer street parking, look for signs with payment instructions and hourly rates. You can pay for parking with coupons available at kiosks and parking meters. Just make sure to fill out the coupon correctly and display it on your front windshield.
Remember to bring exact change as the coin-operated parking machine cannot give you change. Don’t forget to display a valid parking ticket along with your hourly parking ticket if you use a parking space. The Gruž Harbour public car park is also open 24/7.
