Shaggy, born Orville Richard Burrell on October 22, 1968, in Kingston, Jamaica, is a globally recognized reggae fusion artist known for his signature deep voice and infectious rhythms. He moved to the United States as a teenager and later served in the U.S. Marine Corps, which shaped his disciplined approach to music.
Shaggy burst onto the music scene in the early 1990s with hits like “Oh Carolina”, but it was his 2000 album Hot Shotthat catapulted him to international stardom. The album featured chart-toppers like “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel”, both of which showcased his knack for blending reggae, dancehall, and pop into radio-friendly hits.
Beyond his commercial success, Shaggy is known for giving back. He founded the Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation, which supports children’s hospitals in Jamaica. His music continues to evolve, and collaborations with artists like Sting have kept his sound fresh and relevant.
